FAQ
Answers to common questions from voice talent about joining VAA, auditions and synthetic voice projects. VAA casts human voices exclusively for AI and text-to-speech (TTS) projects. We don't handle traditional voice-over work.
This FAQ gives general information about how VAA usually works. It isn't legal, tax or financial advice, and it doesn't replace any agreement. Every project is different: if anything here differs from an agreement you sign, the agreement applies. For advice on your own situation, please consult an independent adviser.
How do I join VAA?
Apply through the application form on our website. You verify your email address, accept our terms and record a short intro script in your language. Our casting team reviews every application, and we contact talent whose voice fits the projects we cast.
If you're accepted, you join our talent database and sign a one-time confidentiality agreement. Please only apply if you're comfortable with your voice being used to create a synthetic voice for AI or TTS. That's the only work we do.
How old do I have to be to join VAA?
You need to be 18 or older. Joining the roster, and any project after that, involves signing agreements.
How does VAA work?
Clients come to us when they need a human voice for an AI or TTS product, such as a voice assistant or voicebot. We cast that voice from our talent database:
- Our casting directors match the client's brief with intro recordings on our roster.
- Matching talent are invited to a private audition.
- The client selects a voice from the auditions.
- The selected talent reviews and signs a Talent Agreement.
- The talent records training data in paid studio sessions, and the client builds the synthetic voice.
VAA is the casting and voice design party. We don't build synthetic voices ourselves.
Is joining VAA free?
Yes. There are no fees to apply or to be on our roster. We only earn a commission when a project comes about through VAA: 20% of the license fee. We don't take a commission on your studio hours.
How can I leave VAA's roster?
Email us at talent@voiceartistagency.com and we'll remove you from the roster. Your intro and casting recordings are deleted right away.
Any Talent Agreement you've already signed stays in place under its own terms. Confidentiality obligations from the roster agreement continue as described in that agreement.
Will I get a public profile online where I can upload my intro recording?
No. VAA isn't a public platform and we don't publish talent profiles. Your recordings stay in our private talent database.
How do clients listen to my intro recording?
Clients don't browse our database. When a project matches your voice, our casting directors share your intro recording privately with that client for a first selection. Intro and audition recordings are only used to select a voice.
Is VAA a voice platform where clients can search and browse for voices?
No. VAA is a curated casting service, not a marketplace. Clients brief us, and our casting directors decide which voices to present. Internal access to recordings is limited to our team of casting directors.
How do clients find talent?
Through us. A client shares a brief: language, accent, voice character, brand personality and how the voice will be used. We search our roster, shortlist voices and invite them to audition. The client chooses from the auditions we present.
Why is my intro recording important?
Your intro recording is the short script you record when you apply. It's often the first thing a client hears from you, so it decides whether you're shortlisted. For TTS, a natural, consistent and clean read matters more than character range or a big performance.
Adding other recordings to an audition
You don't need to add other recordings to audition. Each audition comes with a briefing and a script, and you record that script. Only add other material if the briefing asks for it.
Why do I need to audition for jobs when I'm on the VAA roster?
Being on the roster means your voice can be put forward for projects. It doesn't mean you're cast. Every client has a specific voice in mind and wants to hear you read their own script, so the audition lets them compare voices fairly before choosing.
Quality requirements for intro recordings
Clean recordings let clients judge your voice, not your room. As a guideline:
- Record in a quiet, dry space without echo or background noise.
- Use a good microphone and keep a steady distance from it.
- Don't add music, sound effects or heavy processing.
- Read naturally, at a steady pace and volume.
- Deliver the file format the application or briefing asks for.
Why won't my intro recording upload?
Check that the file is in a supported audio format and within the size limit shown on the form. If it still fails, try another browser or a more stable connection. Still stuck? Email us at talent@voiceartistagency.com.
How does VAA match clients with the most qualified talent for their job?
Our casting directors start from the client's brief and brand: who the voice should be, how it should sound and where it will be used. We listen through the roster and shortlist voices that fit. We also check practical fit, such as language, accent and availability.
How and when are invitations to jobs sent?
We send invitations by email whenever a client project matches your voice, so there's no fixed schedule. Invitations come from a VAA address or directly from one of our team. Because emails sometimes land in spam, you may receive the same invitation twice. If you're unsure whether an email is really from us, check with talent@voiceartistagency.com.
Will I be invited to audition for all client jobs?
No. We only invite talent whose voice and profile match a specific brief, and many projects look for one language, accent or voice character. Not being invited isn't a judgement of your skills.
How do I submit an audition for a client job?
Follow the briefing in your invitation. It explains the script, recording instructions, how to submit and the deadline. Auditions are private: you sign our roster confidentiality agreement before you receive any briefing.
Can a client use my audition files without my permission?
Intro and audition recordings are only used to select a voice. They're never used to train or build a synthetic voice. Training data is only recorded after you've signed a Talent Agreement, in paid studio sessions. How recordings may be used during casting is set out in the roster confidentiality agreement.
Does VAA filter audition responses when they are submitted to clients?
Yes. Our casting directors review every audition before it goes to the client. We check recording quality and fit with the brief, and usually present a shortlist rather than every response.
I attached the wrong audition file! How can I send another response?
Reply to your invitation email with the correct file before the deadline, and tell us which file it replaces. We'll make sure only the right file goes to the client.
When will I hear back after I submit my audition?
We contact talent who are shortlisted or selected. Client timelines vary, so we can't give a fixed date. If you don't hear from us, it's usually down to the brief rather than your performance, and you stay on the roster for future projects.
What is the minimum budget for VAA jobs?
We don't publish a minimum budget, because fees are set per project. In general, VAA projects include a license fee (usually yearly) for the use of your synthetic voice, plus payment for studio hours at a rate you set. Some clients set a maximum hourly rate.
The license fee depends on the scope, such as usage, territory, exclusivity and term. You'll know the fees for a project before you sign anything.
Accepting private audition agreements
When you join the roster, you sign one confidentiality agreement. It covers the whole casting phase (intro, test and audition recordings) for all castings and clients, so you don't sign a new agreement for each audition. It's the same agreement for all talent. Please read it carefully before signing, and feel free to have it reviewed by your own adviser.
Accepting job agreements
If a client selects you, you'll receive a Talent Agreement before any training data is recorded. It's a three-party agreement between the client, Whoozy B.V. (the company behind VAA) and you. It sets out the license fee, scope of use, term, exclusivity and recording arrangements.
Take the time to review it, and consult your own legal adviser if you'd like. VAA connects you with the opportunity, but we don't act as your legal counsel.
Communication with clients
During casting, all communication runs through VAA. Client names and project details are often confidential, so please don't contact clients directly. Once a Talent Agreement is signed, the project briefing explains who you'll work with during recording.
Why would I need to decline a job agreement?
You're never obliged to sign. You might decline if the terms don't suit you, for example when:
- The exclusivity or scope conflicts with other work or commitments.
- The term or usage is broader than you're comfortable with.
- Your union or professional organisation doesn't allow this kind of work.
- You're not available for the recording sessions.
Declining a project doesn't affect your place on our roster.
What is text-to-speech (TTS)?
TTS is technology that turns written text into spoken audio. Modern TTS uses AI models trained on recordings of a real human voice, which is why the voice talent behind it matters so much.
What are synthetic voice projects?
In a synthetic voice project, a client creates an AI voice based on recordings of a human voice talent. That voice can then speak new text the talent never recorded. It's used in voice assistants, voicebots, customer service, apps and other digital products. VAA only works on synthetic voice projects, not traditional voice-over.
How does a synthetic voice project for AI, or TTS, work?
- Casting: your intro recording, a private audition and the client's selection.
- Agreement: you review and sign the Talent Agreement.
- Recording: you record scripted training data in paid studio sessions.
- Voice building: the client builds the synthetic voice with its own technology or a third-party platform. If a third party is involved, we share this in the audition details or the Talent Agreement.
- Use: the client uses the voice within the agreed scope, and you receive the license fee.
VAA handles casting and voice design. We don't develop synthetic voices ourselves.
After I submit a recording to an audition invite, can I still opt out?
Yes. Let us know as soon as possible and we'll withdraw your audition. You're not committed to a project until you sign a Talent Agreement. The confidentiality agreement still applies to any project information you've received.
What can I expect regarding agreements?
What we commonly see in Talent Agreements:
- A license fee for the use of your synthetic voice, usually paid yearly.
- Payment for studio hours at a rate you set.
- A defined scope of use: where, how and for how long the voice may be used.
- Exclusivity, when a project requires it.
With larger technology companies, terms are often broader:
- Exclusivity within the client's domain and towards its competitors.
- Broader usage rights, which usually come with a higher license fee.
- Longer terms; perpetual use also comes up.
This describes what we see in practice, not standard terms. The terms of each project are in its own Talent Agreement.
Does VAA guarantee job opportunities?
No. We work on a limited number of larger projects each year, and the client always makes the final choice. Joining the roster means you can be considered for projects that match your voice.
Who are VAA's clients?
Mostly larger technology companies and enterprises building voice assistants, voicebots and other TTS products. Client names are usually confidential, so we only share them when we're allowed to.
Does VAA represent voices in any language?
We cast in many languages and accents, and our application script is available in 74 languages. Whether we have projects in your language depends on client demand. Joining VAA means joining our talent database for casting, not traditional agency representation.
Can I join other voice rosters when joining VAA?
Yes. Being on our roster doesn't stop you from doing other voice work or joining other rosters or agencies. Only a signed Talent Agreement can restrict this, for example through exclusivity, and you'll see those terms before you sign.
Do I need to have my own recording studio to join VAA?
No professional studio is needed to apply. A quiet space and a good microphone are enough for your intro recording and auditions. Recording arrangements for selected talent are agreed per project and set out in the briefing or Talent Agreement.
